Midwestern Earthquake of 2008.

That was (is) just so much fun. Ha. I live in northwestern Gibson county, Indiana, and, being quite close to the epicenter–around ten miles away from it–this earthquake sucked.

Want to know where it happened? Check this out: USGS.

Usually, we have little earthquakes under 3. These you can feel, but you don’t very often. But not this one, we woke up: The house was shaking insanely and things started falling off the walls and such, but you couldn’t hear it over the constant rumbling of the rolling ground.

It was a 5.4-5.2, so, yeah, it sucked. It doesn’t suck because of the number, it sucks because it lasted over 40 seconds and it was freakin’ scary because we had just gotten to sleep (it happened at about 4:36am central standard time) and we had no idea what was going on.

Since it happened while it was still dark, people are still calling in about everything. There were gas leaks, house problems (i.e. cracks, bricks falling off, and roofs realigned), and there is even damage in Chicago and Louisville, which are both a hell of a lot farther away than my house.

Oh, and the aftershocks are no fun. This last one was the eleventh in the past hour.

P.S. — It’s not uncommon for there to be earthquakes in the midwest like this, though most people don’t seem to think so. We have several fault lines just like other places, but since they are located in the middle of the plate, it spreads out really far and people feel it hundreds of miles away.

P.S.S — Doesn’t anyone remember the New Madrid Earthquake of 1812?

Wow! Glad that you are apparently ok, but what a traumatic experience that must be. I don’t have anything nearly as exciting for today - just a spider.
