Leiocephalus Personatus Ssp.

Also known as the curly-tailed jeweled lizard, the jeweled curly tail, the masked curly tail, and the masked green-legged lizard.

Since there is not much information about these creatures online, I am compiling all that I have been able to find, along with some of my own observations, into this post. I do hope that it helps any other owners out there.

In my personal experience with experimenting with different types of habitats, I’ve found that they tend to enjoy sand (I’ve been using calcium sand without any trouble) with or without moss mixed in. The moss was added in the beginning to give the bottom layer of the cage some moisture, but in the end most of it was taken out. For the most part, my curly-tailed just enjoys burying himself, head first, into the sand. He never lays at the bottom of the tank or right at the top, but squarely in the center of the sand.

As for keeping water, everytime I try to keep the water dish (shaped like a rock and looking like the sand) semi-full, my little lizard just spills most of it. It seems to prefer the water dish being empty, so it can be used as a warming spot. The humidity in the tank is not very high, but the bottom layer of sand is always damp, whether I am the one doing it or not.

Heat wise, the cage has a heat lamp on top all day long, seeing as we keep the temperature in our house at 60F. It does not seem to bother the lizard, keeping the light on 24 hours a day, as it spends several hours sleeping under the sand. Seeing as their temperature is not supposed to drop below 70F at any point in time, and having seen one below 70, the main way to tell would be their activity level. When warm, the lizard is rather active and watches movement, but when cold it does little more than stand in the same spot for long periods of time, unmoving, and not sleeping. We also use a small heat pad underneath the tank, left on at all times. It keeps the sand warm but never too hot–around 70 to 75F.

On to food: Though advised to feed the lizard crickets from the store we bought it from, it would not try them. After a day without eating, and having no idea when the last time it ate at the pet store, I tempted it with a waxworm that we have for our leopard gecko. It attacked and chewed up the waxworm as soon as it noticed it moving. Over the next day, it ate four altogehter. Still, it has not tried one cricket. I am not sure how often it should be fed at this point or how many waxworms would be the proper amount, but I am currently trying different amounts to see how much it can consume in several minutes.

Information from CentralPets.com:

Animal Description.

Colorful, beautiful, and active, Jewelled Curly-tail Lizards can make entertaining pets. Their interesting antics and lovely appearances are quite pleasing both to their keepers and people who observe these lizards in the wild.

Jewelled Curly-tail Lizards are adaptable and can be found in habitats ranging from open forests to sandy beach areas, though they are usually not seen above altitudes of 1,850 feet. When they are disturbed or frightened, they will whip their tails about or curl them up. Jewelled Curly-tail Lizards are terrestrial and many males are territorial, so males should not be kept together. They feed on insects, and are usually active during the day. Jewelled Curly-tail Lizards tend to be quick and can be hard to hold, but are often entertaining to watch because of their high activity level.

The Jewelled Curly-tail Lizard can grow to about ten inches (25 centimeters) in length. These lovely lizards have reddish tails and their bodies tend to be brightly colored with red, black, blue, yellow, green, or orange shades. They have a mostly black background color dorsally, and they have a black mask. Coloration is variable and no two lizards are exactly the same. The scales over the backs of Jewelled Curly-tail Lizards are large, keeled, and overlapping. A small dorsal crest is present. The tails of these lizards are usually longer than the lizard’s total body length.

Jewelled Curly-Tail Lizards are also called Masked Curly-tail Lizards. They are native to northern areas of Haiti. There are several subspecies of Jewelled Curly-tail Lizard. The nominant subspecies was first noted in 1862 by Cope.

Specific Care Information. (Relative Care Ease: Relatively Easy)

Jewelled Curly-tail Lizards thrive under dryer conditions, though medium humidity environments can also be appropriate. A 20-gallon-long terrarium with a deep substrate will work well for one or two lizards. The top layers of the substrate should be dry, and the bottom layer should be slightly damp. Full spectrum UV lighting is recommended. Ambient daytimeTemperatures should be about 85 degrees Fahrenheit with a basking spot about 95 degrees. At night the temperature should be in the low to mid 70s. It is best not to keep two males in the same enclosure. Jewelled Curly-tail Lizards should be fed a variety of insects. Some may accept fruit in small quantities.

Breeding and Propagation. (Relative Breeding Ease: Uncertain)

Jewelled Curly-tail Lizards are oviparous.

Leiocephalus personatus.

The colorful mask iguana is the most famous representatives of the family of iguanas smooth head. In der Literatur (Nietzke) werden bis zu 12 Unterarten aufgeführt, von denen vermutlich fast ausschliesslich Leiocpehalus personatus personatus und gelegentlich L. In the literature (Nietzke) are up to 12 sub-species, of which probably almost exclusively Leiocpehalus personatus personatus and occasionally L. personatus scalaris im Handel auftauchen. personatus scalaris appear in the trade. The information relates to the Nominatform.

Mask iguanas are compact built small iguanas with a short, little remote head. Als erreichbare Gesamtgröße wird 23 - 28 cm angegeben. As an attainable total size is 23 to 28 cm. Most of the animals known to us, however, smaller in total length. The Beschuppung is on the top gekielt, particularly in the male animals back a small ridge, which is to tail tip hinziehen and in the tail region up to 3 mm high. The dress does shed a total of coarser and more than gekielt L. schreibersi. schreibersi.

Charakteristisches und somit eindeutiges Unterscheidungsmerkmal zu L. Characteristic and thus clear distinguishing characteristic to L. schreibersi ist die tiefschwarze kopfseitige Maske der männlichen Tiere. schreibersi is the tiefschwarze kopfseitige mask of male animals. The face of the male appears to mattbraun sand wedge-shaped and contains some bandages drawings in the immediate area at the back. The flanks show the males differently strong Rotfärbungen with sporadic white, turquoise or yellow shed. Anstelle der bei L. Instead of L. schreibersi deutlich vorhandenen Seitenfalte besitzen beide Geschlechter von L. schreibersi clear existing side fold, both sexes of L. personatus lateral eine durchgehende helle Schuppenlinie. personatus lateral light shed a continuous line. The hind legs of male animals have yellowish to greenish stains on the females entirely missing. Weibliche Tiere sind auschließlich in kontrastreichen Brauntönen gezeichnet. Female animals are exclusively in contrasting shades of brown drawn. The flanks are usually dark brown colour, through the continuous bright side line. The front bottom of the females has a clear, dark spots drawing on the males almost entirely missing. Juvenlie and subadulte specimens are colored and drawn as adult females, a sex determination to Umfärbung much more difficult. Moreover, the females slightly smaller and daintier.

Occurrences.

L. personatus in the Caribbean on Hispaniola disseminated and then dry areas inhabited different landscape images such as rocks and rubble habitats in Opuntiendickichten, areas of coastal dunes, scrub land, forests and barren Akazienhaine. In sunny areas, preferably slightly shady and humid peripheral areas populated. Insgesamt weisen die Habitate von L. As Kulturfolger the animals are sometimes in orchards, gardens and residential areas encountered. Overall, the habitats of L. personatus weniger wüstenhaften Charakter auf als die bevorzugten Lebensräume von L. personatus less arid character than the preferred habitats of L. schreibersi . schreibersi. Any dissemination priorities of the various sub-species, the literature short notice (Nietzke, p. 272).

The following climate data apply to the coastal capital of Port-au Prince. They reflect certainly a humid climate schwüleres balanced and wider than the mountainous interior, where the temperature fluctuations partially clear out. The values can therefore only be indicative gorbe.

Attitude in the terrarium.

Because of their agility mask iguanas need a spacious and bright ausgeleuchtetes dry terrarium, the urge their movement is not too restricting and above habitat conditions. L. Although the iguanas - as unfortunately often recommended - even in small terrarium with about 80×40 cm area maintain and grow, monitor their behavior full spectrum, however, is a major accommodation in terrariums (from 2 m). L. personatus besitzt interessante - auf Körpersprache und Färbung basierende - optisch orientierte Kommunikationsweisen, die sich vor allem über größere Distanzen hinweg abspielen. personatus is interesting - on body language and colouring based - optical communications-oriented practices, particularly over long distances to come play. In smaller terrariums this communication distance from the outset mostly lower, so losing animals immediately persecuted and oppressed. Both sexes behave territorial, so even in larger containers is paired only long-term accommodation. Several males are generally not tolerated and fight battles serious damage.

Die folgend dargestellten Haltungsbedingungen von L. The following housing conditions outlined by L. personatus im Terrarium beruhen auf eigenen und fremden praktischen Erkenntnissen in der Terrarienhaltung und sind fundiert durch Informationen über die Habitatverhältnisse und Hinweise aus der Fachliteratur : personatus in the terrarium based on their own and other practical knowledge in the terrarium attitude and are substantiated by information on the habitat conditions and evidence from the literature:

Nutrition.

Mask iguanas feed on itself as a hunter lurking primarily lizards of all kinds of insects, which they actively in short sprints erbeuten and manage. They allegedly take it turned out to different flower varieties and fruit, particularly berries. . Here is the Terrarianer asked always new varieties and variations to try..

Im Terrarium fraßen die Leguane bisher: In the terrarium ate iguanas so far:
Insects: Wiesenplankton , Grillen , Schaben , Wachsmaden und -motten, Spinnen, Fliegen (auch Drosophila ), Buffalos , gehäutete Mehlwürmer , Stabheuschrecken, kleine Zophobas Meadows plankton, crickets, cockroaches, Wachsmaden and motten, spiders, flies (Drosophila), Buffalos, gehäutete meal worms, stick insects, small Zophobas.

Some of the animals can feed with a little patience with little effort, and breed. This is the quality of feed animals personally identifiable. There is no question that the terrarium animals vitality and quality of the food are closely linked, so a possible high-quality food to enhance the animal feed needed to provide a long-term health of the iguanas to support them.
