I-69 Protest and The “Protesters.”

I live in Gibson County, Indiana. Many years ago, it was decided that part of I-69 would go through the edge of our county. Sure, not too many people liked the idea because they would have preferred using our existing highways, but things like this happen.

So, that was a long time ago. They bought most of the land for the construction, but didn’t really do anything. Well, finally, they are getting on their way to constructing the interstate. (If you don’t already know, I-69 is the interstate that is supposed to run from Mexico to Canada. You might want to read more about it here and here to understand how big of a project this is.)

Recent events, however, have been slowing down the process. For one, there have been quite a bit of protest lately. People broke several windows at the local I-69 building. People have been camping out in trees on property due to be cleared. People have been chaining themselves to semi-trailers to make them stop working.

Here’s the problem though: These people aren’t even from here! A lot of these protesters are from California. Am I the only one that sees the problem with their logic? They have no reason to be over here, besides to be in the way. They obviously don’t understand that small towns tend to enjoy being left alone.

We are a county with several small communities. Though we are considered part of the greater Evansville metropolitan area, we are not. We are full of tight-knit communities that do not like many “outsiders” coming over to butt into our business. (If you’ve grown up in the city, I don’t expect you to understand it—but it would be nice if you respected it.)

There are not a whole lot of jobs in this area either, so with I-69 finally starting construction, it brings in jobs to many people. Now, some of those people may or may not care about what I-69 is “doing to the environment” or anything like that. These people are just trying to work to survive, which many of us in the county have to do every day.

And in come these protesters that have no idea what it’s like living around here. In all honesty, how do you think those kids got over here? They surely didn’t work their asses off through high school, save it all up, and then one day decide to “help” our community.. They probably got most of their money from their rich parents. So, they obviously have no clue about the “hard life.”

Now there are a bunch of crazy Californians over here, stopping traffic and complaining about the environment. I’m all for the preservation of wildlife and I hate the thought of I-69 destroying forests, but it was decided long ago and we did what we could then. At the present time, all these kids are out doing is keeping people from working and providing for their families.

Example: Some of the protesters stopped a semi after it delivered to a company that is working on part of I-69. They kept him from working for half of the day, which he will not be paid for. How is this peaceful? They don’t know him and he really didn’t have anything to do with I-69—he was just doing his job! What if he has a family and can’t make the bills because they screwed him out of part of his pay? Are they going to give him enough money to feed his family because of what they did? I don’t think so.

A lot of these “protesters” are pathetic. They bitch and moan about how horrible it is that people are doing something, but if they were put in the same situation they would be working on it too. They don’t understand what it’s like living from day to day and they probably never will, because no one makes them.

No one really liked the idea of I-69 coming through here, but we sucked it up and we’re dealing with it. If we couldn’t stop the construction, I don’t see a chance in hell of these protestors succeeding in doing anything but causing harm. All they are is a big nuisance!

Honestly, I wish that the police would charge them all for the amount of money they are costing the people that are just trying to do their jobs. We should follow these kids home and protest outside of their places of work and see how they like it!

You can find out what they are doing in the county by searching it in Google: I-69 Gibson County Indiana.

And in case you don’t think they’re crazy, please read some of this: Stop I-69.

I live in Michigan near I-69. It’s been a great addition to our infrastructure. I was unaware of plans to extend it south of Indy. I followed your links and have to agree with you that these people are crazy. I also agree that they should be arrested for stopping companies from doing business and charged with not only reparations, but a fine for what amounts to an assault on the business and the individual workers. It may not be the best thing, but if the locals have worked thru the issues and agreed to let the road come thru that should be the end of it. Sounds like the protesters don’t think you guys are smart enough to make your own decisions.

My one question is why did the police send 30 cars and then stand around all day? Why didn’t they just cut the chains and arrest the people who were stopping a legitimate business from operating?

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

According to the local paper, the police thought leaving them alone and letting them leave on their own was the best choice. (Apparently, they didn’t want a riot on their hands, though I doubt that would have occured.)
